Although Las Vegas is known for its great indoors, it is probably one of the best Outdoors city in the U.S. Here are the unique or uncommon attractions.
Vegas is the number one mountain biking city in the U.S. close to Cottonwood Valley with 200+ miles of track and highly challenging Bootleg Canyon. Water consumption in the desert may be multiples of other U.S. areas so be prepared.
Rock climbing is outstanding in Red Rock canyon with mostly solid sandstone that may turn soft after a rare rain. Bolting is somewhat discouraged but some bolts have already been set by local climbers.
Skiing and snowboarding are close in Lee Canyon (Mt. Charleston). There are 10 runs, 2 diamond, 7 square and 1 circle. Manmade snow stretches the season from November to April with January the peak month for natural powder.
Las Vegas is about 300 miles driving from the west rim of the Grand Canyon. Tour coaches, helicopters and small planes get you there if you decide not to drive yourself and flight distance is only about 100 miles.
Here is a list of parks, recreation areas, etc. in the vicinity of Las Vegas. Vegas is much more the hub of incredible Outdoors activities than is generally realized.
